The Toymaker: Goran Lelas

DIFFICULT to neatly categorize, Goran Lelas  various creations encompass many artistic fields such as fashion and magazine illustration, costume design, sculpture, product and shoe design, and most recently children’s theatre plays. His multi-faceted output is tied together by his inclination for child’s play, use of bright color and whimsy.

In 2008, contemporary toy makers StrangeCo invited Lelas to design a series of characters that were actualized into collectable toys titled Somewhere City. They were co-branded by the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and sold in the renowned museum’s design shop. Lelas describes himself as “passenger” in the world and lives between New York, Zagreb and Milan, or wherever his work takes him.

Most recently he has been developing his Somewhere City toy characters into a children’s theatre play.
