Damir Doma: Balancing Femininity and Austerity

From spiritual-nomadic to retro-ski-resort urban, the collections of Croatian-born fashion designer Damir Doma are both elegant and luxurious. He has consistently garnered critical acclaim since his debut menswear collection in 2007 and has attracted high-profile clients such as Rosario Dawson and Lenny Kravitz.

Doma aims to reinterpret various cultural references without being too specific, taking cues from his own mixed heritage and eclectic upbringing. Born in the town of Virovitica, Croatia, to Croatian and Hungarian parents, Doma spent his childhood in Germany surrounded by textiles in his mother’s atelier. After graduating from Ecole Supérieure des Arts et techniques de la Mode in Berlin and Munich, he spent a few years interning and assisting Dirk Schönberger and later Raf Simons in Antwerp. In 2006, he joined the group Paper Rain and then moved to Paris.

Doma’s sensibility plays with paradox and opposition. Past designs have been raw and refined, streamlined and voluminous, ambiguously bohemian and vaguely urban, however all show a delicate sensitivity to materials. Most recently, Doma created a buzz with a Fall/Winter 2013 collection that aimed for a modern, futuristic look by way of boxy cuts, slouched silhouettes, touches of plaid, and thick ski caps hinting at retro Alpine fashions.  The Damir Doma label features three lines: a women’s collection, a men’s collection, and SILENT, a more relaxed line that naturally arose from his own need for casual clothing. After several successful seasons, Doma opened a flagship store on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris, symbolizing a milestone for the brand.
