A HIGHLY regarded and commercially successful designer, Svjetlana Despot is at the helm of Data by Despot, a brand name known for a variety of fun, artistic furniture pieces, design objects and accessories sold internationally in cities like Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Rijeka, Berlin and Toronto.

Decorating interior spaces and designing contemporary pieces and products for over 20 years, Despot’s versatile creations are defined by her use of playful bright colors and her interest in experimenting with the craft of design in new ways, and with modern processes and techniques. Making timeless pieces that will endure fleeting fads, Despot’s creative philosophy is mixture of respect for the design industry and a liberalistic rejection of stereotypes and clichés as she works towards adding to and developing the language of design.

In 2013, Despot will exhibit her Hula Hula chair at the world-renowned  Design Museum Holon. The Israeli art institution will showcase Despot’s hand woven chair amongst an array of works from designers taking part in Common Roots, Design Map of Central Europe. In an attempt to explore cultural relationships between the different European nations and cultures, the exhibition will feature individual works that attempt to demonstrate the cultural similarities and simultaneous design developments that have occurred across the various countries.

Despot’s Hula Hula chair is an embodiment of her design manifesto – modern technology, hand-made. Using new, but recycled stockings, which did not pass factory quality control, Despot blends the use of contemporary resources with traditional weaving techniques while suggesting new uses for old objects.
