Vlatka Horvat at Boston University Art Gallery
CROATIAN born, London based artist Vlatka Horvat exhibits at Boston University Art Gallery with Also Called: Backbone, Anchor Lifeline until December 20th.
An exhibit exploring the notion of space and the human body’s relationship to the constructed world, Horvat has collated materials from the surrounding Boston University campus and wider areas.
Assembling an arrangement of scaffold planks, packing foam, cinderblocks and other random detritus Horvat has created pathways, passages and spatial configurations visitors must navigate their way around. Immersed in Horvat’s compact environment of discarded objects raises questions on how we occupy and move within our built environments – a repetitive concept in Horvat’s works and perhaps indicative of her performance background.
The gallery will publish a Lexicon of Spatial Dysfunction to coincide with the exhibition. The Lexicon will consist of “terms and images exploring dysfunction spatial relations between objects, bodies, structures, surfaces,” explains Horvat, including text, images and drawings solicited from a community of artists.
