Aćimović’s ‘The King’
DESCRIBED as an “inspiring portrait of courage” by American film critics, Dejan Aćimović’s ‘The King’ focuses on Croatian war veteran-turned-paralympian, Darko Kralj, who is the only athlete in the history of sport to break a world record five times in a single day.
An intensely personal story, in the documentary Kralj speaks bluntly about being directionless after the amputation but eventually finding his bearings, thanks partly to his family and partly to the sport, which he discovered through a chance conversation with another amputee.
After winning the Best Documentary Film Awardat Vukovar Film Festival, the Audience Award at Liburnia Film Festival in Ićići and the Audience Award at Mediterranean Film Festival in Široki Brijeg in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Aćimović is now breaking new ground in the US with audiences and auteurs alike with film festival reviews in the agenda-setting New York Times, the film industry bible Variety as well as the LA Times, Indiewire and the Examiner.
